Wild Water have been at the forefront of the Darwin original music scene over the last decade. Their sound captures the contemporary urban identity of Top End Australia, reflecting the connection of its members to the sea, the land and its people.
Singer and songwriter ‘Djolpa’ fronts the group and sings in his mothers language ‘Brarra’, Kriol and in English. His voice weaves tales of his life story as an Un-Burra man from Maningrida.
The Wild Water sound transcends genres and encompasses reggae, rock, dub and funk. The songs move from tropical reggae such as ‘Sunset Bay’ that celebrates Aboriginal Top End life to heaver rock songs such as ‘Mimi Man’ and ‘Arnhem Land Blues’ which are all about Djolpa's home land. ‘Crystal Clear Water’ and ‘Blyth River’ reflect the tranquillity and beauty of the places that they are about.
Wild Water began in 1993 at a youth centre in Darwin where members of the group used to hang out. Since their inception they have performed across Australia and Internationally.
Wild Water have performed at the Buranga Festival (NT), Woodeford Festival (QLD) Survival Festival (NSW), Bellingen Festival (NSW), Yeperenye Festival (NT) and performed in Papua New Guinea.
WildWater have supported the likes of Yothu Yindi, Maxi- Priest, Colin Hayes, The Cruel Sea, Regurgitator, Weddings Parties Anything and Vicka and Linda Bull. The group has released an independant EP “Baltpa’ and has released their debut album ‘Rrawa’.
In 1996 the group was awarded a ‘Deadly’Vibe music award for Most Promising New Talent and was awarded a Reconcilliation Award for their song ‘Diffrent Colours’.
