The Deadly Awards - which celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement in music, sport, entertainment and community - were presented at the Sydney Opera House last week. Gurrumul was named Best Male Artist of The Year – the fourth time he has won this award (2012, 2011, 2009, 2008) and his seventh Deadly trophy in total since his solo career kicked off in 2008.

Gurrumul was not present to receive his award but sent a thank you message to the audience from his home on Elcho Island in North East Arnhem Land - :
