Three languages from the Alligator Rivers region of northwestern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory This is a first dictionary of the stone country languages Erre, Mengerrdji and Urningangk, which were traditionally spoken in and around Oenpelli. Today all three are extinct. ![]() Erre, Mengerrdji and Urningangk are presented in three separate dictionaries within the book, each followed by an English finder-list. The dictionaries are based mainly on audio recordings made by Peter Carroll and Joy Kinslow-Harris in the 1960s and on field notes compiled by Arthur Capell in the 1940s. An introductory section provides some historical background information as well as some phonological and grammatical notes on the languages. The accompanying CD contains excerpts from archival recordings to give the reader an idea of what the languages sounded like. This book is produced and published by the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation with funding from the Commonwealth Government’s Maintenance of Indigenous Languages and Records (MILR) program.
